Expressing Praise

Ephesians 5:19-20
speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NIVUK)

The opposite to the foolishness that Paul had previously written about (Ephesians 5:15-18), is the wisdom of honouring the Lord.  We cannot do that without the help of the Holy Spirit, but when we are filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) then we will overflow with praise of all the good things the Lord has done for us.  That should start in personal devotions but then quickly extend to sharing our love of the Lord with other Christians, in the family, at church or at work.  It is a normal part of a believer's life.  It is good for us, as well as glorifying to God (Psalm 135:3).

Praise is not manufactured by human beings.  It comes from God; He puts it into our hearts and we express it (Psalm 40:3).  It is a sign of our committed relationship with Him, as we decide to respond to Him in praise (Psalm 57:7).  It is an expression of gratitude for His redemptive power in our lives (Psalm 71:23).  The Early Church was committed to the Lord and to each other and praise was a normal part of their fellowship (Acts 2:46-47).  In our day, godly friendship is also wonderful, but do we use that time to share our social or cultural interests only?  How much of your time with other believers is focussed on the Lord and all His goodness (Malachi 3:16)?

Praise is the antidote to pride and fear.  It might arise from a Bible devotional when meeting a fellow Christian at work for a few minutes to pray.  Christian songs based on Bible truth can also be very helpful, at home or in the car, or to (quietly!) fill the mind when doing repetitive work.  Many people find that a Scripture-filled song can keep truth close to their heart during the day.

Once praise starts coming out of our mouths, we will not stay in whining or moaning mode for long.  At work, your colleagues will certainly appreciate the change!  Whatever the difficulties at work, our God is still supreme so we should praise Him (1 Thessalonians 5:18).  Whatever problem we face, we can thank Him for knowing how to resolve it, and praise Him for His loving wisdom in steering us through whatever sea of confusion we face (Ephesians 5:20).  A heart that is singing God's praise knows that there is nothing He has not allowed for our good, and so we must give thanks that God is at work in it all (Romans 8:28).

Prayer
Father God. How I thank You for all You have done for me in Christ and for the amazing ways in which You have worked in my circumstances. Forgive me for my proud complaining, and praise-less fear. Thank You for music and songs that can help me to remember important truths from Your Word. Help me to be thankful to You for everything so that I can be glad, this week, that You are in control. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
