The Only Person Who Has Ever Seen God

John 6:46
No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. (NIVUK)

This claim, that Jesus is the only person who has ever seen Father God, has massive implications!  The Jews knew that even Moses was forbidden to see God, or he would die (Exodus 33:18-20).  The holiness of God is so intense that anything even slightly unholy is burned up in His presence.  Yet Jesus claimed to have seen the Father - because He was with Him and has come from Him (John 3:13). This meant that He was as holy as God, as pure as God and as powerful as God, because He is God in a human body (John 1:1-3).

This is why Jesus is so unique.  He had always been with Father God for all eternity past, before He was born as a human being (Colossians 1:15-20).  As God in a human body, He had no embarrassment in telling the truth about Himself.  But because nobody had ever met such a person before, they could not understand (John 8:27).  So, Jesus needed to keep teaching the truth about Himself to the disciples – they were the trainee apostles who needed to be ready to explain Jesus to the world (2 Peter 1:16-18).

Christianity is not just another religion, with a different leader and different rules.  It is the movement of billions of people who have believed that Jesus is God the Son, who came to earth to be a substitute sacrifice for the sins of the world.  They know that He enters into a real relationship with all who believe in Him (John 10:27-30) - a relationship which lasts through death and never ends.

The role of the church (that is, all those people who believe in Christ as Saviour and Lord) is to enjoy that relationship, learn to live in a way that pleases Him, and communicate the truth about Jesus with those we meet.  The core of our message must not be the rituals of the church but the righteousness of Christ.  So let us love Him, live to please Him and be unashamed to explain the uniqueness of our wonderful Saviour.

Prayer
Almighty God. Thank You for making Yourself known to this world in the person of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, I would only have religious rules to follow, but in Christ I have a friend in heaven who loves me and intercedes for me. Forgive me when I have become more absorbed by my religious activities and service than by loving Jesus and developing my relationship with Him. Help me to be active in putting Him at the centre of my thinking - conscious of my relationship with Him. Help me also to be unashamed to explain the uniqueness of His Divine character to those around me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
