When a blind man starts seeing, people start asking questions.  This young man, who Jesus healed, had never seen anything (John 9:1).  He was born blind, and everybody expected that he would always be blind and have to beg for his living.  They assumed that nothing could change.  So, when he walked around in the town unaided, the local people could not believe their eyes.  Who is he?  Is this really the same man?  Can people really change that much?
 
Their questions were answered by the young man who, for the first time, looked at his neighbours and identified himself as a changed man.  It was all because of Jesus.  He was not embarrassed to tell them how Jesus had put mud on his eyes and instructed him to wash it off in the Pool of Siloam.  Nor was he ashamed to admit that he obeyed Jesus, because he had received the gift of sight.  He was thankful that he had a new life (2 Corinthians 5:17).
 
What a lesson for the disciples.  Jesus was teaching them to expect transformation when people respond to the gospel.  This young man had not asked for healing, and was not brought by enthusiastic friends, like the paralysed man in Luke 5:17-26.  It was apparently an accident of circumstance.  The disciples noticed him and talked about him to Jesus (John 9:2).  It was the Lord who took the initiative and then commanded the man to obey.  That was to be the model of gospel ministry.  The apostles were to take the initiative, proclaim Jesus as the Saviour and command people to respond by inner faith and outward obedience (Acts 17:30-31).

When that happens today, people are still transformed in a way that they and their friends could never imagine.  The Lord will also make the changes He wants in us as long as we are obedient.  Do not be afraid or ashamed to tell what the Lord has done for you; and work with Him, taking the initiative to announce the Saviour Jesus, calling them to repent, believe and obey.  And expect to see transformation!
