The idea of talking directly with God seems, to many people, irreverent or impudent.  How can a lowly and sinful person have direct communication with the Creator of the universe?  Surely, at the very least, a priest would be needed as an intermediary.  That seems reasonable … because God cannot tolerate sin.  However, Jesus Himself has become our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16) who fully understands our weaknesses.  He promised that His disciples would soon have the privilege of talking with Father God just as He did (John 16:23-24).

God the Father especially loves everybody who loves Jesus and believes in Him: they become His children (John 1:12).  Jesus’ physical encounter with the world was temporary: He was born to die.  When He had paid for the sins of the world, and rose from the dead, His work on earth was done.  He left the gospel in the hands of the disciples to tell the world about Him, and through them His church would be built (Acts 1:8).

They would not need to rely on Jesus, or some priest, praying for them; they would be authorised to speak personally with Father God, in the Name of Jesus.  (‘In Jesus’ name’ means: trusting in His sacrifice, which gives access to the throne of God, and asking the Father for whatever would please Jesus.)

Some still think that they have no right to speak to God.  But people who believe in Jesus, repenting of their sins, become children of God. They have free access to their Father, and ought to practise speaking with Him. He is delighted when His children ask Him for anything which Jesus would like to see happen.
