Sin is described as a trap which ensnares people (Psalm 9:16; Proverbs 29:6).  It stops them moving forward with God and paralyses them in a painful and frightening place (Psalm 69:2-3).  This is all part of Satan’s work (2 Timothy 2:26).  The Apostle Paul recognised that believers do sometimes get trapped in sin, but God has provided brothers and sisters, who are living by the Spirit, to help them (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
 
Releasing somebody’s leg from a trap in the ground will need to be done gently, otherwise more damage and pain will be caused.  The Holy Spirit guides the rescuer to find the trapped person and shows how to help them get free.  It always needs the truth of God’s Word because the traps are the lies set by the devil (John 8:44): it is only the truth that sets people free.  John 8:31-32 says, “Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

However, there is a danger for the rescuers, if they are proud or conceited, thinking that they have the power or wisdom to release people from bondage (Galatians 5:26): they may themselves be ensnared by that lie and become useless in ministry, and unable to help others to be set free.  Humility in ministry is essential, without it the blind lead the blind and they are a liability to each other.  The Pharisees were like that and Jesus said strong words against them (Matthew 15:12-14).  
 
The family of God should be looking out for each other, to check that they have not fallen into one of the devil’s lies.  If they have, we have a responsibility to identify the lie that has caused the problem and counter it with God’s truth.  Part of that truth is to assure the previously trapped person that they will be forgiven when they confess and repent, and therefore they really can move on with God again.  They do not have to be held back any longer.  At the same time, everybody who ministers to others must beware the danger of a proud heart which will prevent them helping others and risks their own walk with Jesus stalling.
