The Goodness Of God Direct To Us
Paul did not hide his message to the churches in Galatia (what is now western Turkey). He was very clear, direct and even strident in his denunciation of the false teachers who were perverting the believers (Galatians 1:6-9). In particular, the false teaching that Christians had to obey the Jewish law and be circumcised if they were to belong to God’s family. Along with that was the essential teaching that faith in Jesus alone was the route to God’s acceptance (Galatians 3:11); the truth that all who believe in Jesus are made children of God and not slaves of a religious system (Galatians 3:26; Galatians 4:8); and that God sends His Holy Spirit to enable people to know Him and to change their lifestyle (Galatians 5:16-18).
Like all the believers in other churches, those in Galatia were his brothers and sisters (Philippians 1:8). He loved them and was tender-hearted towards them, although he vigorously opposed the lies which they had started to believe (Galatians 1:9). He did not want them to be left feeling unloved; but he also wanted them to change to wholeheartedly embrace the truth with God’s help.
Inside each of us is our spirit. It is the God-created part of us that is designed to respond to God, His truth and His love. It is the bit of us which desires and chooses. Therefore, believers are not alone, because the Holy Spirit sent by the Father and the Son is also within us (Romans 8:9). He is the Spirit of truth (John 14:16-17). And so Paul prayed that the Holy Spirit would apply the grace of Jesus Christ to their spirits: assuring them of salvation, expressing the healing love of God to them, giving them the ability to discern the lies around them and the courage to welcome and obey the truth.
It is only the Lord who can alter our hearts. Only He can enable us to see the truth and reject the lies. Of course, we need the Word of God, and those who encourage us to understand it and live by it – so that we might recognise the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ as His gift which is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Let us look to Him to give His grace and welcome His presence as He unpacks His kindly goodness directly to us.
