Is Faithful Marriage Too Serious A Commitment

Matthew 19:10-12
The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry." Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others - and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it." (NIVUK)

Jesus had been questioned about divorce: was it permissible if a wife displeased her husband? Jesus took them back to the creation account in Genesis 2:24 to demonstrate that God's plan was for permanent, and not temporary, marriage. The divorce and remarriage cycle had more in common with adultery than maturity.

The disciples were horrified and considered that perhaps singleness and celibacy was preferable to the risk of an uneasy marriage, if the man could not send his wife away and marry again if he wanted to. Although Jesus was unmarried and celibate He did not claim that was the normal pattern for the children of the kingdom. Apart from anything else it would defy God's physical procreation plan for the world - a matter which was not in Jesus' mission.

Jesus said that there would be some people who could gladly remain single and godly: those who have no sexual appetite, those who had been castrated and those who accepted the call of God to singleness so that they could be of special use to Him in advancing His kingdom. But singleness should never be an escape route from the responsibilities of lifelong committed marriage. Singleness is special: it needs a God-call and a godly response.

Accepting God's will for our lives is never going to be easy because the world, flesh and devil will all struggle against it. However, when God's Word is clear it must be obeyed. Some may think that singleness is hard, but it is no harder than persevering in love within a troubled marriage. The normal call is to marriage, but only with another citizen of the kingdom. Where that is not possible for whatever reason, listen to God's call asking you to accept the situation in which He has placed you without struggling against His loving hand.

Prayer
Faithful Father God. Thank you for the gift of marriage in which we are designed to learn and practice lifelong commitment. Forgive me if I fail to understand Your plan for my life in this matter, when I might reject what I have been given and try to grasp what is not mine. Please help me to value the situation of life in which You have placed me, knowing that You will give the grace and strength to fulfil Your plan with joy. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
