The Bible teaches five things about the second coming of Jesus;

All through the New Testament there is an expectation that Jesus will return.

To the apostle Paul, the Christian life should be lived while we wait for Jesus' return (1 Corinthians 1:7, 1 Thessalonians 1:10). James saw life as the moment before Jesus return (James 5:7-9), and Peter spoke of trials in this life refining our faith so that it will be proved genuine when Jesus is revealed (1 Peter 1:7). Paul charges us to flee from a love of money and keep on going forward in the faith until Jesus appears again (1 Timothy 6:14), and to complete the ministry that we have been given to do because Jesus will be appearing with His kingdom (2 Timothy 4:1-5).

As we read the New Testament, we see that our responsibility is to live life to the full, while we wait for Jesus' return.

We will clearly see Jesus return.

We do not listen to rumours or believe reports that Jesus has already returned, for we will clearly see Him come back to earth. Both Mark and Luke tell us that people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory (Mark 13:26, Luke 21:25-28). Revelation 1:7 says: Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him, and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him.   (NIV84)

Jesus will return in person.

Luke explains that when Jesus ascended to heaven, two angels announced that He would return from heaven in the same way (Acts 1:9-11), and Paul confirms that Jesus Himself will come down from heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

We cannot predict the date when Jesus will return.

Paul tells us not to worry about times and dates, but to be ready every day for Jesus' return (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11). Luke agrees that we must be ready because Jesus will come when we do not expect Him (Luke 12:39-40) and the church in Sardis is told to wake up, because they will not know at what time Jesus will come to them (Revelation 3:3).

Jesus will return to judge all people.

The present age will be brought to an end and all things will be restored & renewed. The Bible teaches us that we are responsible for the way that we have lived, and Jesus will judge each one of us when He returns again (Psalm 96:13, 2 Timothy 4:1, Matthew 25:31-46). The first heaven and earth will pass away and a new heaven and earth will be revealed . Both Isaiah 65:17-25 and Revelation 21:1-27 give us a glimpse of this incredible new creation untouched by sin and the devil. This is the final destination for all God’s people, after their time in this world.
