Visions are given by God to some people, but not all people, at His discretion. There is nothing you can do in order to see a vision. True visions can’t be created by us, they are given by God at his command. God certainly does speak through visions to His people today (see Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2:14-21), but they are not the normal way he communicates. Even in the book of Acts there are only 5 recorded visions - given to Ananias, Cornelius, Peter and Paul (twice) – just four people in a book which covers nearly 30 years of history where God was doing all sorts of amazing things.

It is also worth noting that some visions are not from the Lord, but are false. Ezekiel 13:1-9 shows us this:

“The word of the Lord came to me: ² ‘Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are now prophesying. Say to those who prophesy out of their own imagination: “Hear the word of the Lord! ³ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing! ⁴ Your prophets, Israel, are like jackals among ruins. ⁵ You have not gone up to the breaches in the wall to repair it for the people of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the day of the Lord. ⁶ Their visions are false and their divinations a lie. Even though the Lord has not sent them, they say, ‘The Lord declares’, and expect him to fulfil their words. ⁷ Have you not seen false visions and uttered lying divinations when you say, ‘The Lord declares’, though I have not spoken? ⁸ ‘“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: because of your false words and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign Lord. ⁹ My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.”

It is important then, if you or someone else does see a vision, that you weigh it against what God says in his Word to see if it is true or false. God speaks to us primarily through his Word, which is inspired by His Holy Spirit, and is sufficient for all we need to know about God; what is right and wrong; and how we are to live in order to please him. This is what Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:14-17:

“¹⁴ But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, ¹⁵ and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, ¹⁷ so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

It is important then that you know and love the Scriptures and realise that God has already spoken to you in a clear and powerful way. We would encourage you to immerse yourself in the Scriptures and be satisfied in what God has already said to you through them. God may choose at some time to reveal a vision to you, but that is up to Him.
