Obeying God

Matthew 15:1-6
Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 'Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!' Jesus replied, 'And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, "Honour your father and mother" and "Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death." But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is "devoted to God," they are not to "honour their father or mother" with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. (NIVUK)

It is a good habit to wash hands before eating.  That practice became a traditional way for religious people in Israel – not wanting to be hygienic, but to use ceremonial hand washing to express their holiness.  Successive generations had created a web of religious rules covering exactly how the people should live their daily lives.

Although many of these were based on the Law of Moses, many detailed regulations were added over the 500 years before Christ.  These became social traditions which neither clarified God’s Law nor demonstrated God’s heart (Mark 7:5-8).  Even Jesus' accusers did not dare say that ceremonial hand washing before every meal was an instruction from God.  They were content that if the human tradition was maintained, there would be social cohesion and stability in Israel.

But Jesus did not command His disciples to obey human rules or become clones of the religious establishment, when the issues had not been commanded by God.  When questioned, Jesus challenged the integrity of the religious leaders.  They had developed a clever religious way of avoiding financial and care help for elderly relatives - by publically declaring their wealth as 'set apart for God' (‘Corban’ in Mark 7:11) they escaped any family financial liability.  In practice, they simply spent their money on themselves, and their elderly parents had little support.

Jesus exposed their duplicity.  There is no point in keeping a set of humanly devised religious rules if their effect is to undermine what God has actually said.  We can do the same thing.  It is much easier to make up little rules which we think we might be able to keep, rather than to struggle to obey what God has clearly commanded.  Take stock of your own religious practices, and see if you are genuinely obeying the Lord, or simply keeping in with other members of your religious club.

Prayer
Lord of truth and love. Thank You for wanting me to get to know You as a person, understanding what does, and does not, please You. Forgive me for making religious rules (which may be common in my church), while disobeying You in an area which is clearly explained in Your Word. Please help me to have the integrity to live consistently, fully in tune with Your desire for my life. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
