Christ is in You

Romans 8:10-11
But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. (NIVUK)

Every Christian lives with a paradox.  Our spirit is now alive because God's Spirit has indwelt us; and yet our body is dying and one day will be dead (Romans 5:12).  At the same time as we are enjoying our relationship with the living Lord and look forward to meeting Him, we live in a corrupt world with a corrupted body which can fail to function properly.  One day it will stop functioning completely.

However, those who believe in the risen Jesus will be physically raised with a new body when He returns (John 6:44).  Our resurrection body, like Jesus’ resurrection body, will not be corrupted in any way.  Incredible as it may seem, our resurrection body will last for ever, and will never fail to fulfil its purpose and will survive the scorching purity of God’s presence for ever (Job 19:25-27).

What matters in life, is not how much we can do with our body until it stops working, but how well our spirit agrees with the righteousness of Christ.  Our new life in Jesus now is to get us in practice for an eternity of righteousness (2 Peter 3:13).

So much anxiety would be avoided if we realised that our bodily achievements count for very little, unless they are the fruit of a sanctified spirit.  And the weakness of our bodies will worry us much less when we know that this life is not everything - we will be magnificently transformed for an eternity of joyful service to our Lord.  While the world invests everything in what can be seen, the Holy Spirit urges us to invest for eternity - unseen now but fully revealed when Jesus returns.  So, stop for a moment: consider how you will invest for an eternity with Jesus today.

Prayer
Eternal Father. Thank You for making me alive in Christ through Your Holy Spirit. I am sorry when I often have such a low horizon in my life, preoccupied with my ambitions, achievements and failures. I am sorry when my body demands a higher priority than Your eternity. Please help me to live today in the light of Your return and my life with You for all of eternity. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
