Hoping and Waiting Patiently

Romans 8:25-27
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. (NIVUK)

There is no doubt that Jesus will return: Jesus said it (John 14:3) and the Bible predicts it in significant detail (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; 2 Peter 3:10).  This 'hope' (the Bible's technical word for 'reliably confident expectation') has proved to be the essential motivation for the persecuted church: uncertain of today but confident about Jesus.  Yet, hard times are still hard … and our bodies, minds and spirits do groan as the pressure increases.

Waiting for what God has promised is the testing ground of faith.  Patient endurance is the hallmark of the believer who is confident that Jesus has all the answers and will fulfil His promises at just the right time (Revelation 1:9).  We trust the Scripture which says, "No temptation [or testing] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13).

The extremity of endurance is groaning as faith holds on by its fingertips.  But when our faith is so stretched that we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit understands all that we cannot put into words, and He prays for us.  He searches our hidden depths and presents us to the Father, so that God's mercy and grace might be unleashed for our blessing.

In the hard times Satan’s ploy is to encourage us to believe that we are all alone and nobody really understands.  That is not true: it is a lie.  Not only is God around us, the Holy Spirit is also within us, and has the right to search every part of our soul. And when we do not understand ourselves, He does.  Furthermore, "… we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose..." (Romans 8:28).  He has the knowledge and the power to do us good and to get us right so that we can serve our God in righteousness.  So, let Him do it!  Stop resisting - because He really does know best!

Prayer
All-knowing God. Thank You for knowing all about me; even understanding my character and motivation better than I do. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for praying for me when I do not know what to say and feel so weak. I am sorry when I have despaired, thinking I was all alone; because the truth is that You were within me all the time. Help me to take hold of the truths in theses verses so that I will allow You to work in my life as You desire - in order that I can be strong to serve You, even in the hard times. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
