No Fear in Christ

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." (NIV)

When we trusted in Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord, something remarkable happened. God sent His Holy Spirit into our hearts! His holy presence is no threat to the believer who has confessed all their sins and accepted God's pardon. The Holy Spirit will never accuse us again of our sins which have been forgiven through the cross. Therefore there is no threat of punishment over our heads causing us to fear.

Instead, the Holy Spirit warmly assures us that we are now fully accepted as members of God's family. We are the children of a loving heavenly Father. He desires to nurture us and not be nasty. Where discipline is needed, He is kind; and where the circumstances are hostile, He is compassionate. So the Holy Spirit assures us that there is no need to be afraid because we have been born again as children of God.

Religion, without being born again, is so different. We feel pressurised to work hard to get better, or try to pay off the guilt of our own sin: this will always induce fear in those who are conscientious. But when we receive the grace of Christ and understand that our condemnation has been taken by Him, we are free to receive the love of God. 1 John 4:18 says, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." So don't listen to Satan's lies, he is only trying to frighten you. Welcome God's work in your heart and rejoice as you receive the love of Father God today.

Dear Heavenly Father. Thank You for welcoming me, a sinner saved by grace. Thank You that You love me unconditionally. I am sorry when I have allowed fear to dominate my life, keeping me away from Your love, and threatening punishment if I do not achieve perfection. Thank You that Your Holy Spirit assures me of Your love and of my privilege to have a place in Your family. May this truth provide the confidence I need for this day. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
